The precise "you forget 50% in an hour, 70% in a day" figures often attached to the forgetting curve are not reliable universal facts - they come from one man memorising nonsense syllables. What is reliable is the shape: rapid early loss that gradually levels off. That shape is enough to plan around.
Why the Curve Exists
Forgetting is not a failure of effort or attention. It is a feature of how memory is built.
New information first enters short-term storage. Without retrieval, the brain treats it as unimportant and lets the memory trace weaken - a kind of housekeeping that keeps you from being buried under every trivial thing you encounter. Meaningful material with strong associations decays more slowly than isolated, meaningless material, which is one reason a word learned inside a vivid sentence outlasts the same word drilled bare. The second is that the method is slow to look like it is working. Cramming produces a short-lived spike that feels like learning; spaced, effortful review feels harder and shows less on day one. The difference only appears weeks later, when the spaced learner still has the words and the crammer does not - a payoff that requires patience during the exact period when the method looks least convincing.
